Student's & Silk Painting

Hello again!
I want to share with you some projects we did

in my classroom in the final days of school this year.



The center of my BB shows the silk paintings.
One group painted on silk ties and the timing was so perfect...
"Fathers Day" is coming up!
Also, 2 of my students painted florals on silk rings.

The results of their hard work....TADAHHHH

The Coin

I was able to dig up some info on the coin my necklace is made out of...

Columbian Exposition

Exhibit: 1893 Chicago World's Fair - Columbian Exposition

Whether or not you like commemorative coins, you can thank the 1892/1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Although some consider the 1848 quarter eagle ($2.5 gold) with the “CAL” stamp the first commemorative, they were not specially designed (but the intention of the coins was to celebrate the gold found in California). Link

Design

The half dollar features a portrait of Columbus on it, which is a similar portrait to the one featured on one of the admission tickets (link) and one of the postage stamps (link). In fact, both the tickets and the stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company, who also printed fractional currency.

Anyhow, the portrait is probably based on Lorenzo Lotto's painting of Columbus from 1512 (link) - but it may also be based on Olin Warner's bust of Columbus (however, I could not find anymore specific information on that). Both the coins were designed by... you guessed it, Charles E. Barber.

On the reverse of the half, we see the Santa Maria, two hemispheres of the earth, and the date – which is one of the few US coins with the date on the reverse. The quarter on the other hand features Queen Isabella of Spain, along with the date. The reverse depicts a kneeling woman as a symbol of woman’s industry.

Well here it is Thursday June 7th! My grades and attendance
sheets are all in and am I thrilled!!!

Tomorrow I head out to see my surgeon for my
ONE YEAR CHECKUP!!!

After this week is over I will be able to return
 to my studio and have some fresh new art to share with you!

Graduation 2012

Greetings my friends! Well another group of lovely, intelligent young women have graduated! This makes my 12th year of teaching here and seeing my students off to (hopefully) a bright and happy future!! Last Thursday was Class Day... It was a gorgeous sunny warm but not hot day!!! Everything was really perfect! All the students were dressed up and we got our first look at the graduating class in their cap & gowns. There was a Mass and then Awards we're given out. Just when we all thought the assembly was ending....Sr. Ann Said she wanted to recognize one more person. She began to tell how this person had done so much work in planning and designing the schools new chapel. Even designed And made the stained glass (style) windows. It occurs to me Hey she is talking about ME !!!!!!!! I went up and got a hug and a gift from Sr. Ann! YES.... I Was quite thrilled! The gift is a lovely silver coin necklace! THE COIN has very SPECIAL Meaning!!! It is a comremative coin from the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair! Now Let me explain.... One of my window designs was addapted from the mural painted by Mary Cassatt For the Women's pavilion at the Chicago Worlds Fair! More on this later.... Back in a jiffy
