Tessellations

Hi all!
Here is a peek into my high school art classroom...

In my Graphic Design class we are making our own tessellations!

1. Make a pattern
First you start with a 3" X 3 " card (cut from an index card)
Draw any shape line from the top left corner to the top right corner
Then a line from the top left to the bottom left corner
Cut the top piece and tape it to the bottom
Cut the side piece and tape it to the other side

•see my example

Next take a large sheet of paper and lightly draw 3 " squares
on the entire sheet.

Then trace your pattern piece in each square

after tracing then color your patterns.

My tessellation is a Geisha face altered with a Geisha dancing

Thats all for now!

Soft baskets

Hello there!
My 3D class made the  sweetest soft baskets in class.

                         Inside the basket...

Close up view of the bottom

You start with rope from say, Home Depot. I dug out some misc. yarn to tie up the layers of rope.
You start with the edge of the rope and wind it tightly. Anchor it with some yarn tied in a square knot.

I found it easiest to have my
 student work in pairs.
 One to wind and form
the bowl and the other student to tie on yarn as needed.

They did such a lovely job
Don't you think?

Changes-The only guarantee in this life

Each day that passes provides us with the opportunity
 to witness change occurring.
From the sun rising and setting to watching
children grow before our eyes -
change truly is the only guarantee in this life.

Riding in the car this morning I noticed that
the leaves are the most beautiful mix yellow's and orange's.

New Shoes

Greetings!
What a wonderful crisp, cool, autumn day it is today!!
It makes me want to dig out my wool sweaters and sip on some mulled cider
while sitting and watching the leaves fall!
I plan to go to the orchard this weekend so I hope the weather remains lovely
as it is today!

I bought some new shoes last week and thought it would be fun to jazz them
up a bit!
They were plain suede beige lace shoes by Bass.

I took the laces out and put them aside temporarily.

Then with black permanent marker I made circles and other similar shapes all over the surface of the shoe.

I tried to make some shapes larger than others.
Can you see what animal design I'm going for?

Next .... I filled the shapes in with color (pink)
of course!!

Then I taped down the area that had the spots.
To protect them from the dye.

Now... I was ready to add color to the other part of the shoe.

Let them dry and add the laces...

VOILA!....

I just love them!!!

I wear them with my brown cord paints and pink sweater top!

Have a great day!
Hugs,
Mary

Rough going..

Hello my sweet friends
I am back. I am so sorry I got bogged down.
Things will be back to normal as life has a way of continuing no matter
what happens day to day.

Last Saturday I lost one of my dearest and best friends.
It came as a complete shock.

Tomorrow is the funeral. Another close friend and I will be speaking at it.
We hope to be able to express our feelings about this very special lady.
We also will be speaking for the others that were in our "sewing group"

It was Jans idea originally to begin our "sewing group".
We started with just Jan, Laurie, Nancy, and myself over 30 years ago!!!
Later Beth and Betty joined our group as well.

Jan was an expert quilter.  She really had such an artistic eye!
Her quilts and quilted hangings and tree skirts were amazing!!!

But most of all Jan was an honest, kind hearted, gentle, woman.
She had the gift of grace.

Not only was Jan my dear friend but she was also a grandmother to both
of my daughters! She taught them to sew and to do quilting.

What a gift Jan was!!

Vincent van Gogh wrote that "close friends are truly life's treasures.

Sometimes they know us better than we know ourselves.
With gentle honesty, they are there to guide and support us, to share our laughter and our tears.
Their presence reminds us that we are never truly alone."

All for now!

Hugs,
Mary

Welcome Mimi & Grandaddy

Shortly after our arrival we feasted on surf and turf!
Yummy!! Our lobsters were priced down to 3.99$ a lb.
We finished watching the sunset by the fire making "some-mores"

After a good nights sleep
The first activity on our list was Kayaking

So gear up everyone!

Yes ...everyone!!

And off we go!

Note it was a tight fit for "Daddy and Son"

Finger Lakes

For several years we have had wonderful vacations at the Finger Lakes.
This year we are at the smallest of the lakes.....Lake Conesus.

Until the 18th century, The beauty of Conesus Lake was disturbed only by
the canoes of Indians who lived near the lake or came to set their nets.

I came across a poem by A. Krause ( 1924)
"To awaken in the morning when the sun comes up an shines
And breezes gently rustle thought the maples and the pines
To gaze upon Conesus and to watch the waves at play
Is there anything more wonderous than the glorious break of day?"

Well this morning I woke up around 5:30 and went out on the dock.
It was beautiful. The lake was very still and the fog seemed to skim along the surface
of the water. A beautiful Herron flew overhead and two Kingfishers flew by
together while chirping to one another quite loudly.
What a lovely start to my Saturday morning.

A Day At The Lake

Greetings my friends!
What a beautiful day we have here!
It was supposed to be a rainy day but we
Made it through to sunset without a drop or even a threatening cloud.

I am writing this on my iPad. I am still fairly a novice and am
Having problems getting my photos from the iPad onto my blog.
Any advice out there?

We had a fun filled day. Some of the family went kayaking ( yes and some like
Myself took naps)

We ended the day by the campfire making Somemores and watching the sun go down.
Talk about the perfect day.  Did I mention I am here with 2 of my grandsons so what could be better than that!!

Oh "Blueberrying" we shall go...

Hi all :O)
It is another glorious day here in New England!

I love the fact that my next door neighbors have a blueberry farm...
They have pick your own from 8-1 daily (except on Tuesdays)

I do love not to just pick and eat blueberries but... to catch their likeness in quick
watercolor paintings.

When I was finished picking and painting
I made up a little basket to take over to my dear friend Jan.

Beat the heat

Hi all!
I am writing to you from the cool guest bedroom at my daughters home.
I'm very grateful she has air conditioning!
The past few weeks have been breaking records all over the US.

As I wrote before my dad passed away several weeks ago. So my sister and I and our husbands have been in Louisville going through the house and contents. A very bittersweet time going down memory lane.

Marginal Way

What a beautiful day yesterday was!!!
The weather was perfect in Maine.
Friends of ours were up for the weekend and so
off we all went to Ogunquit ME.

We had a yummy lunch at the "Lobster Shack".
A former student of mine recommended eating there.
The other members of our party got the lobster roll that came with chowder.  I got the fish tacos.  Then we all got dessert which was a huge strawberry shortcake.

We were stuffed and decided to walk around and see the shops and of course - walk the Marginal Way.

The ocean was fairly calm...No huge waves like I have seen before.

This is one lovely home I saw along our walk.
Yes, I am always drawn to welcoming front porches with the American flag proudly hung.

Along the walk I took loads of flower pictures.

(I will add some more floral shot's later)  The beach roses were beautiful and fragrant hmmmm...

Before we hit the road for home we did make one more stop.
That was at the Stonewall Kitchen.

It is a massive building with a "Studio Kitchen" for lessons and broadcasts.  In the other part was a cafe and shop (Um I will take one of everything please...Teehee)

Outside the building were beautiful gardens. I especially LOVED the cute hanging watering cans.

As I said before it was a perfect day in every way!
All for now!
Hugs :O)
